At the Green Grass Lake temple complex there was a pagoda, shown here c. 1956. The role of the pagoda was to efficiently store, on multiple levels, boxes of ashes from the deceased. Each box measured approximately 10 inches square and on the front would be a photograph of the deceased and pertinent information to identify them. |

The Confucius temple in Hsinchu was very colorful and modern looking. The worship of Confucius was one of three mainstream religions along with Buddhism and Taoism. In addition, there were numerous other deities worshipped including that of Matsu, the Goddess of the Sea. This photograph was taken in 1958. |

A street market scene in Hsinchu in 1954 showing both simple and elaborate stalls. I do not know what the vendor in the foreground is selling but the vendor to the right of the photograph is selling hot food, perhaps a soup dish. With refrigeration rare at this time, people generally shopped every day for their food supplies. |
